In this episode:
Neil Yorio, a former researcher at NASA’s Bio Regenerative Life Support Systems program, is now the vice president of LED agricultural lighting at BIOS, a company that custom engineers LED lights for both human and plant use. According to Motherboard, Yorio says that LED is the future of lighting for commercial cannabis growing. A good quality of LEDs cost between $1500 per light and can last over 10 years if a grower uses them 12 hours a day. Although the use of LED lights in the cannabis industry hasn’t reached its full potential, Yorio believes its impact could be revolutionary.
A group of professionals from Maine’s business community has come together to call for better regulation of the state’s marijuana industry. Maine Professionals for Regulating Marijuana is made up of attorneys, realtors, accountants and medical marijuana dispensary owners. According to the group’s website, the organization hopes to help inform policy makers and legislators to address many of the issues facing the state’s medical marijuana industry. According to the Portland Press Herald, Maine Professionals for Regulating Marijuana is not yet taken a stance on Question 1, a ballot initiative to legalize recreational marijuana. The group’s President, Toby McGrath, states, “If Question 1 doesn’t pass, this industry is here and needs to have more robust regulation and enforcement.”
There is one last marijuana retail license left for grabs in Aurora, Colorado’s third biggest city. A maximum of four cannabis stores is allowed in each of the city’s six council wards. Aurora issued 23 out of 24 licenses two years ago after an extensive evaluation and scoring process but a license in the southeast part of the city went unclaimed. The application process will open on October 3rd in which the city hopes to award it to a lucky applicant by February 2017. Applicants who do not currently operate a retail marijuana store in Aurora must attend a mandatory pre-licensing meeting. They also must submit an application to the state. Applicants have until November 30 to submit their application.
