A Dry Kind of Cold

A Dry Kind of Cold

My truck, out in the middle of Montana, after a snow storm and in VERY cold winter day.

Here in north central Montana it gets cold. VERY cold.

Yesterday my thermometer read a very cryogenic -20º F when I crawled out of bed. And that was not the wind chill. No, that dipped to -40º and -50º at times.

I can now say with confidence I know what a vegetable feels like at Birdseye when it is flash frozen. And the coldest days of this Montana winter are ahead.

There have been times while living in Montana when I have laughed out loud. This phenomenon, which rarely happens to me, usually happens when I go to places and see things I never thought I would do. On this particular morning, two dozen or more miles from the nearest paved road, I encountered another one of those moments. Only this time I wasn’t laughing.

Back in my home state of Wisconsin one does not worry much if they get stuck in the throes winter. Seldom is one more half a mile from a farm house in the most remote corners of Wisconsin, which makes it easy to hoof it to nearest residence to seek help. In these parts of Montana, however, the nearest person is often 20, 30, maybe 40 miles or more away. And when you toss in some extreme weather and the possibility of encountering a very hungry natural born predator, you have yourself some danger.

Especially if you are not smart about it.

Which I seldom am.

While most of Montana had the good sense to stay home on this morning, I jumped into my truck at 5 AM and headed into the back country opening up some of the quiet, country roads with my pick-up. My tires cut grooves through the virgin snow as headed deeper and deeper into the middle of this snowy, barren desert and further away from Havre. Two or three times I got out of the truck to survey the road (and the snow drift) in front of me. I needed to make sure my truck could plow through it. Several other times I turned around because a drift was just too big. And other times I slid off the road trying to avoid a drift. Luckily I managed to right my ship each time.

After this particular journey on this particular morning I realized that I needed to prepare myself better for these photo excursions of mine. Starting immediately I am improving the emergency gear I have with me at all times. I also need to file an itinerary with someone before I head out into the back country (just in case I don’t return). Yes, heading out ill-prepared into Montana’s winter desert is about as stupid as stupid gets.

Yes, it’s cold here in Montana…but it is a dry kind of cold.
